Khaps can't ask women not to carry mobile, dress in a particular way: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court said on Monday that any order by Khap panchayats asking women not to carry mobile or dress in a particular way is violative of law and is an offence.

Appearing before a SC bench, top police officers from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana said that Khaps issue socially retrograde resolutions but were never directly involved in the honour killings.

The apex court will hear the views of Khaps on March 5 before passing an order on a PIL seeking protection of young couples, who married inter-caste or within the same gotra, from the wrath of khaps.

Khap panchayats in Uttar Pradesh on January 12 said they will oppose same-gotra marriages before the Supreme Court, which had sought their views following a plea to curb violence against couples at the behest of such caste councils.
